So, after making a muslin for the Tova tunic, I decided that it just didn't fit me well. I found that I am in between two of their sizes and didn't want to make the larger one so I ditched it. It was a really good learning process for me (my first garment for me,) and it convinced me that I needed to take a garment sewing class from somebody that could show me the ropes in person. (Thanks for all of your great comments on that post too- very helpful and most appreciated!)
So, a friend found a teacher for us, we picked a pattern and we jumped in.
We're making the New Look 6871 pattern and so far so good. You can follow my progress on Instagram and over at Threadbias. I'll be finishing it up next week after I learn how to put in the sleeves and finish all the seams without a serger. If this whole sewing clothing thing goes well, guess what will be on my birthday wish list this year!
Our teacher mentioned doing a class on techniques which I think would be great too. I really just want to learn the right way to do things so I don't have to google every step along the way!
I think after we finish this top, I'd like to make the Washi dress and add sleeves to that. I'd really love to have it finished by Sew South. I've got 5 weeks to go so I better get a move-on!
Any garment patterns you love? I'd love to hear some recommendations!

Jennifer

what are those cute fabrics? Can't wait to see you in your handmade clothing
Your dress / top looks great ! I've just posted about a dress I have just finished- and the sleeves are all part of the bodice!
Love your fabrics! I think I will look for that pattern.I thought I needed a serger too but found my machine has a few overlock stitches which work really well. Want to see your finish :)
Wow, your top looks great! I better get going on mine - it's still rumpled in my bag :(. I really like the V so I think I will try that on mine.
I think the technique class is a good idea too. Maybe we can look at some of the projects we would like to make, start a list of techniques that we will need and have her show us how.
Ack, 5 weeks! I was dreaming of having a whole wardrobe sewn for Sew South. I think I may settle for a couple of tops now. :) I thought sleeves would be super hard when I made a tunic recently, but they were fairly painless. Good luck!
The fabrics are so cute! Love where it's headed.
My faves are:
Tova
Washi
Made by Rae Spring Top
I need to branch out!
Glad you had fun with it! I have to say that the really popular ones don't work for me due to my rather, err, enhanced bust, so unless you're also a 34G, I'll spare you my favourites ;o)
Really pretty fabric choices!
It's going to look amazing!
I need to have a go again sooner rather than later xxx
Oh my! I love those Art Gallery fabrics. In fact, the flowery print just made its way to my house this week! Beautiful!
Not every pattern works, smart to set it aside for now. This new one looks great though!
