I used to write fiction growing up- took creative writing in high school and college. I'd stay up late working on short stories and would read them to my friends when they came over. Would have loved to have something like The Writing Faculty growing up.
Writing and talking- for me they go hand in hand. When I am writing a blog post, I imagine we're sitting together, sipping coffee, catching up.
Because really, blogging is all about the conversation, the connections, and sharing information.
It's a chat between friends over coffee or a glass of wine,
It's a here, let me show you something cool,
It's a listen to what I've discovered,
It's an OMG you are never going to believe what happened to me kind of sharing.
Whether you shout or you whisper, you want to be heard.
For me blogging has become as much a passion as quilting. I have something to say, write it down, and thankfully y'all listen and read.
To keep it fresh, I like to keep it short (most of the time) and conversational.
So I went off in search of a dictation app- something that would let me talk to you in a blog post so to speak. Well, I came across Dragon Dictation and so far, so good. It's an iPhone app that I speak into and can then email or text myself (or anyone else) the content.
Now then, it's a bit tricky at first and is definitely not perfect. This text is taken directly from my dictation without editing:
"Okay say here's the thing I think it works great for short ideas that you get in the grocery store in the carboline anywhere that you don't feel too silly talking to yourself if he can pull it off that you talking on the thing and get comfortable with that then your thoughts cannot easily in the beginning I had a really hard time talking to myself thinking like a Blonquist and I still have no idea how to put in punctuation"
What I actually said was:
Okay so here's the thing- I think it works great for short ideas that you get in the grocery store, in the carpool line, anywhere that you don't feel too silly talking to yourself. If you can pull it off, that you talking on the phone and get comfortable with that, then your thoughts come out easily. In the beginning I had a really hard time talking to myself and thinking like a blogger, and I still have no idea how to put in punctuation.
Not too bad. They say the more you use it, the more it understands your speech patterns and vocabulary which is good because I've had some CRAZY auto-corrects.
But anything that helps the writing process and helps me be as genuine as I can be is a good thing. I've learned I self-correct and edit in my head a lot when I am writing and so far I am not great at editing my speech fast enough. But that doesn't bother me too much.
| Sneak peek of a current project What about you? What gets the conversation going? Is there anything here at ELQ that you would like to chat about some more? I'm all ears! |

I think conversation tone is the best one for blogs. Very recently, I needed technical help and the only blog I could find for help was not only dry, but almost confrontational and condescending. I literally found myself yelling at the computer screen. I actually asked a question on a forum and he arrived on my post, yup....confrontational. Who wants to listen to that on purpose?
I have the dragon for my dyslexic boys to help get their ideas in text for papers, but I love the idea for my blog. Sometimes sometimes nags me and I can't get anything done until I get it on a draft! Thanks for the idea!
I would find that handy in the middle of the night, you know, when you wake up with a "brilliant" idea, and then either can't remember in the morning, or it just really is not as brilliant as it was at 3 a.m.
Thanks! It sometimes takes me an hour to write a blog! Very time consuming!
Great blog post! And I just love the little castle peeps in the center of your new block, can't wait to see more
What a fabulous app! I'm gonna look for it right now. Sometimes I have a hard time writing what I want to say. And some times I think I just drone on and on... maybe this will help! And I don't mind a little editing :)
Almost I am persuaded to get a smart phone... LOL I love writing, and I guess I'll have to keep typing and editing! Great post tho; it's nice to know that's available. I've thought about voice recognition and a mic on the PC, but I've not put my thoughts into action. Yet. :)
I agree about posts being short and conversational. And yes, sometimes it's as much fun as quilting! (almost!) A note on the Dragon Dictation, it also works on a newer I-Touch, good for those of us that don't have smart phones!
First off I LOVE your blog.. and I really liked this post. I can relate to having that conversation, I have only 23 followers and yet when I post to my blog whatever it is, just some thought or a tutorial, whatever... I'm writing it as if I'm talking to you right there. My husband asked me if I felt silly "talking" to no one... but you know, I don't. It feels all too natural. The one funny thing for me is that I can "talk" to you much better blogging than I probably can in person. I think it's the ability to edit ones self online and in real life not everyone has an edit... or as my daughter the professor would say a filter. I'm still behind the times on the smart phone thing... mainly due to the cost of it. It's funny that I have twitter and don't have it on my phone. I spend a lot of time "checking" things online, that I know a smartphone would cut down on. Oh well, I'll decide that one later... I've rambled on enough for now... again thank you for such a wonderful blog... I appreciate it and you!

You are wonderful! I do feel like we're "chatting" as I read your posts. We too use a program similar to Dragon for dyslexia at our house. To put in punctuation, you "say" the punctuation you want- ie. "period", "comma", etc. Pretty easy once you get used to saying it all out loud :) That might be the dead giveaway that you are not talking on the phone though :) hehe!
Heh, dyslexic Dragon user here. Well I'm meant to be ;o) I have tested it in the day job though, and as I said to Lynne at Lily's Quilts, there should be practice text for you to read through for it to learn your voice better. A lot of people skip that bit thinking it isn't important, but it really is! They used to have a bunch of options, including Alice In Wonderland passages - it may take an hour or two to get through it, but it will improve the recognition no end.
With an Aussie accent, voice apps are to say the least, interesting. It definitely pays to "practice" to help it become used to the accent.
I love the "chatting" tone of blogs, it feels much more personal.
I don't know - I have visions of all those fat folks in hover-chairs in Wall-E when special-needs gear gets used by the able-fingered!
Keep doing what you do though, I wouldn't change you for the world x
I want to try dragon too and love Katy's hint about the practice paragraphs.
I think it is fair to say that I have NOT had great success with the one on my HTC. Perhaps I will see if there are other apps in the market which will understand my kiwi/Aussie blended twang a little better hehe
I have considered buying myself one of those voice recorders in the past and playing it back to myself to type up as diction though. Because I too find that the best ones are more conversational and I overthink them too much when I try and retype a previous thought and I'm no longer in the moment.
First I am haveing a cup-o-joe with ya!
I find when I am blogging I type how I would talk. And I guess that is a good thing, because it does come out as 'me'! But on the other hand, I do tend to be very dark with my sence of humor, and a little (lot) sarcastic and have to remember that the people who read my blog really don't KNOW me, so I do sometimes pull back from me. You know! Otherwise if they read my blog they might just think I am being mean all the time!! hehe
I downloaded the app and used it straight off and it caught most of my speech. I did not dictate 'her wave of the folks', but overall, it's great.
Thank you, thank you, and thank you for posting this
i laughed out loud at hadleys comment! she is so fun.
